King of Ashes, está confirmado en castellano de la mano de Edge, por lo que pronto, tendremos noticias de el, en castellano.
In our previous articles about the new The King of Ashes expansion for Cadwallon: City of Thieves, we examined the new mercenaries that would be coming onto the scene, and the rules that will govern their exploits. In this preview, we’ll be venturing into the depths of the Catacombs themselves.
A devastating earthquake has wreaked havoc in the city of Cadwallon. These tremors herald the prophesied return of Sophet Drahas, the King of Ashes, and an entrance to the fabled Catacombs beneath the city has been revealed. Enterprising adventurers vie for the privilege of being the first to loot the cavernous passages and hidden rooms, but they must tread lightly as they explore. The dread Cyclops of Mid-Nor prowls the deeps beneath the city, and no thief is a match for his might!
Touring the Catacombs
The Catacombs offer a host of new rooms to raid, each with its own challenges and treasures. Every time a player finds a staircase Exploration token, he can choose to explore one of five rooms in the Catacombs. Let’s take a tour of each of these rooms that the new board has to offer:
If players approach the Holy Altar, they can use the power vested in the location to convert any Magic Gems that they are carrying into six ducats apiece. Using the Holy Altar wisely lets players lighten their load while filling their pockets.
Players looking for that bit of an edge that only Arcana cards can bring should take a trip to the Scriptorium. This ancient library affords the player the opportunity to spend an action point and roll for extra Arcana cards and the added possibility of an Experience token! The higher your character’s Mind value, the better your chances of scoring the extra loot, so bring your brainiest gang members.
The alarm has been raised, the militia is closing in, and there’s no way out of the district on the surface! Any brave thief that ducks into the Catacombs can take his chances and roll to attempt to escape the district by means of the treacherous underground Tunnel. A lucky thief can get away with all his goods intact, but beware! Many an adventurer will go missing for good (along with three ducats and everything he’s carrying) in those winding subterranean passages, and some will barely escape with their lives, leaving two pieces of treasure to be lost forever to the maze.
The gangs of Cadwallon aren’t the only ones making use of the Catacombs. The militia has taken advantage of the situation as well, and has decided to set up their new Prison deep in the depths of the Catacombs. Players are sent to Prison by losing battles with the militia, or due to the effects of an opponent’s skills or Arcana cards. Getting thrown into the Prison is not a great position for any thief to be in, and the only action available to a gang member in lockup is to attempt an escape.
Whenever your opponent has been collared by the militiamen and thrown in the Prison, players may want to take a trip to the adjacent abandoned Torture Chamber. Thieves in the Torture Chamber can spend an action point to steal one treasure from anyone currently locked up in the Prison.
Hidden throughout the city of Cadwallon are Encounter tokens with a Secret Mechanism. If a player has one character in the room with a Secret Mechanism, then they can send another thief into the Catacombs to loot the Treasure Room of Sophet Drahas, the King of Ashes himself. Players in this room must roll three dice to see how many ducats their character carries off from the hidden horde, but be careful! If any two dice have a matching value, the sorcerer’s magical traps will kill you instantly.
The Cyclops of Mid-Nor
Lastly, there is one chamber in the Catacombs, strewn with bones and blood, where even the bravest adventurers dare not go: The Lair of the Cyclops of Mid-Nor!
The beast begins the game in his lair, and only returns should some especially tough thief be lucky enough to best him in battle. Beating the Cyclops back into his lair requires the player to win two rounds of combat in a row. Losing either of the battles sends the unlucky thief directly to the Prison of the Catacombs.
When a player descends into the Catacombs and chooses which room to explore, he must immediately attack the Cyclops if he’s present. If the player enters an empty room, he must roll to see if the Cyclops charges into the chamber before they begin rifling through the room’s treasures. Seasoned adventurers know to take a bit more care with the monster on the loose, so players with Experience tokens may attempt to avoid combat by spending one token to reroll the location of the Cyclops.
The dangers of the Catacombs are well worth the promises of wealth, so gear up your gang, brace for the Cyclops, and venture into the Catacombs beneath Cadwallon with The King of Ashes expansion for Cadwallon: City of Thieves!
