Behind the seals and wards of a secret tomb lie twelve elite warriors, encased in bonds of sacred linen and purest silver. Though their king is long dead, the warriors’ service to the powers of darkness is a constant threat. A lone Guardian keeps eternal watch, hoping to reclaim her lost honor by forbidding both the entrance of trespassers and the rising of sleeping horrors.
Fantasy Flight Games is proud to announce Oath of the Outcast, the first Hero and Monster Collection for Descent: Journeys in the Dark Second EditionOath of the Outcast offers you new options for exploring the potential of noble heroes and the overlord’s deadliest monsters through a new form of expansion.
Oath of the Outcast introduces four heroes and three monster groups previously only available in the first edition ofDescent: Journeys in the Dark, as well as two brand-new quests. Trenloe the Strong, Laurel of Bloodwood, Elder Mok, and Shiver join your quests as eager heroes, but even as they enter your quests, monsters arise to attack. Oath of the Outcast includes three monster groups: bane spiders, beastmen, and razorwings! You will also gain two new quests in this expansion: Oath of the Outcast and Prison of Ice and Lies. In these quests, you will attempt to stop the perpetrators of a dark ritual from reanimating a host of powerful undead warriors.
A New Type of Expansion
Hero and Monster Collections are a new type of expansion for Descent: Journeys in the Dark Second Edition. Each one contains four heroes and three or more monster groups, updated for the second edition of the game with completely new art and figure sculpts. Every Hero and Monster Collection also includes two quests, to be played individually or as a Rumor quest in a campaign. For more information about Hero and Monster Collections, we turn to developer Nathan Hajek:
Hero and Monster Collections are an exciting new branch of our Descent: Journeys in the Dark Second Editionexperience. Many players who have played other games in the realm of Terrinoth have become fans of characters and monsters like the mysterious Shiver, savage razorwings, or the aged Elder Mok.
“One of my favorite parts of the development process for these new Hero and Monster Collections was getting to see these heroes become more defined with new art, sculpts, quotes, and backstories. I always enjoy reading and writing backstory for the heroes we’ve released, so it’s great to establish more facts as we update how they fit into the game. The monsters included in Hero and Monster Collections also have new art and sculpts. Heroes and monsters alike feature dynamic poses and great detail.
“As we created these collections, we decided to find a way to tie everything in each collection together. To that end, each collection includes two new quests. These quests have been specially designed to showcase some of the heroes’ and monsters’ unique strengths. The quests stand alone, or alternatively, if your group plays with Rumors, you can use the included Rumor cards to use these quests in a full campaign. The quests tie a collection together, and give each pack a unique theme and feel.”
Penitent Magic
Today, we’ll take a closer look at a hero and a monster group included in Oath of the Outcast, and explore how they can affect your games.
It is widely believed that Shiver’s origins are connected to the Shadow Tear and the fall of the Daewyl elves. However, even he cannot confirm this. His earliest memories are punishment and penance, with nothing prior. A desperate and sorrowful soul, Shiver exemplifies humble service among friends and reckless abandon in a fight, giving his all to earn the forgiveness and peace he desires more than anything else.
As Shiver works towards redemption, one of the best ways for you to use him is to put him between the other heroes and danger. Shiver’s ability and heroic feat can give the other heroes the time they need to complete your objective by slowing down any approaching monsters. Shiver’s hero ability forces monsters to spend an additional movement point to enter a space adjacent to him, allowing him to hold a narrow passage almost single-handedly against approaching hordes of monsters. If the overlord chooses to keep running past, Shiver’s heroic feat can stop them in their tracks, spending an action to immobilize each adjacent figure.
Shiver’s natural talents for magic and sorcery give him the powerful tools he needs to destroy the overlord’s monsters once he’s trapped them near him. Immobilized monsters can still attack, but they won’t be able to get closer to the other heroes. By keeping the monsters focused on himself, Shiver can take damage and protect the other heroes, buying them the time they need to accomplish their objective.
Poison Webs
The different monster groups from Oath of the Outcast may attack in different situations, but if your heroes travel through the dark of night or the depths of a cave, they may encounter the bane spiders. Bane spiders rely on their ability to spit gobs of sticky, acidic venom into the eyes and wounds of their prey when hunting. The matron of the cluster is especially dangerous. After ensnaring a careless adventurer in her cocoon, she and other bane spiders pull the hero into the shadows and douse him in foul poison.
Stronger than their cave spider cousins, bane spiders can harry a party of heroes to destruction. Bane spiders possess the ability to make ranged attacks by spitting their venom, but because they use the blue attack die and the red power die, this monster group won’t be able to project their acid as far as other ranged monsters. The benefit of using the red power die rather than the yellow power die is increased damage potential, making bane spiders a deadly opponent, especially when combined with their abilities to poison a hero and pierce his armor.
Even when locked in close combat with the heroes, the master bane spider can use the Cocoon ability to ensure the heroes cannot flee. By immobilizing a melee hero adjacent to the master bane spider, you set the hero up for another round of punishing attacks from bane spider minions that remain just out of reach.
Sentinel Against Evil
Two new quests are included in the Oath of the Outcast Hero and Monster Collection, specially designed to highlight the monsters and heroes included in this expansion. These quests, Oath of the Outcast and Prison of Ice and Lieschronicle the heroes’ efforts to forestall the awakening of an ancient evil. Long ago, twelve mighty warriors were entombed. Their tomb was sealed with mighty wards and a powerful Guardian, outcast from her people, who swore an oath to protect the tomb against trespassers.
Now, though, evil is trying to reawaken the warriors within the tomb, and you must stop the ritual at the Tomb of the Twelve. These quests can be played individually, or woven into a larger campaign with Rumor cards. If you use a Rumor card to put the first quest into play, the second quest automatically appears in Act II of the campaign.
Expand Your Adventures
With a host of heroes and monsters alongside new quests, Oath of the Outcast offers you an expanded experience for any game of Descent, whether you play a campaign or individual quests. Look for this expansion at your local retailer in the second quarter of 2014, and stay tuned for information about more Oath of the Outcast
