These are our lands. The riverlands are watered with Bracken blood. And Frey, and Whent, and Piper, and Darry, and even Blackwood, godless tree-worshippers that they are. And Tully, aye. Tully most of all. If the lions thought that they’d have only our rivers to fight, well, we’ve been proving them wrong!”
         - Mytos Bracken
War has come to the riverlands, and House Tully will soon take the field!
The Lords of the River reinforcement set for Battles of Westeros adds three new commanders, three new troop types, and several new rules with which to wage war in the Seven Kingdoms. Today we’ll take a look at a few of these exciting additions.
Lords of the River introduces the concept of ally forces to Battles of Westeros. Ally armies can supplement the forces of a House, such as House Lannister and House Stark. House Tully is allied to House Stark in the scenarios included in Lords of the River. However, players are free to use ally forces with either House Stark or House Lannister from the core set, allowing players to create their own alternate alliances or rivalries.
The Lord of Riverrun
Three new commanders are included in Lords of the River, including Brynden “Blackfish” Tully, Edmure Tully, and Marq Piper. These famous lords of the riverlands are accustomed to fighting in their home realm, and know how to lead their troops through the otherwise hindering terrain that surrounds them. Edmure Tully is a particularly powerful commander, able to use the loyalty of his troops with maximum efficiency.
Edmure’s unit ability allows him to sacrifice an order to have an adjacent unit (whether active or not) move or attack. This particular ability is useful in many situations, since you can convert an order to activate a unit which you may not have order tokens for. Also, since you can use it on activated units, it would be wise to keep Edmure’s unit in the thick of things to give your units greater versatility, letting you activate certain units more than once without wasting precious rally cards.
Leaping Trouts Under a Hail of Arrows
Edmure’s commit ability really shines when used in combination with the Tully Longbowmen, who wield superior bows with deadly precision. The Tully Longbowmen are experts in ranged combat, benefiting from the new Indirect Fire and Volley keywords. Indirect Fire allows ranged units to draw line of sight from an adjacent unit’s hex, meaning they can avoid having terrain get in their way when trying to line up a shot. Meanwhile, Volley allows adjacent ranged units to contribute to the activated ranged unit’s attack, offering the attack a plus one for every contributing ranged unit. These abilities make the Tully Longbowmen some of the deadliest ranged units in Battles of Westeros!
Using these units in combination with Edmure’s commit ability creates a deadly artillery-like effect, allowing Edmure todraw line of sight for a potentially destructive hail of arrows!
Death From Above
Lords of the River introduces another new feature that can make Edmure and his trusty Longbowmen even more threatening. One of the new pieces of terrain is unique - the first type of terrain that players choose how to use. Included in Lords of the River are outpost position tokens, which are used in combination with the Outpost terrain hex. When a unit enters the Outpost hex, they must choose whether they want to enter the tower or the barracks, each building represented on either side of the outpost position tokens.

(Outpost Position tokens: Barracks and Tower)
The barracks offer cover, which can be very useful for protecting important units or figures. However, the tower offers certain advantages to ranged units. First and foremost, units in the tower are immune to melee attacks (meaning they cannot use melee either while in the tower). This is great for ranged units. In addition, a unit in the tower gets a bonus to its range, cause opposing ranged attacks to lose range, and can see over blocking terrain. This makes the tower the ideal spot for ranged units.
Now, imagine a unit of Tully Longbowmen in a tower while Edmure Tully mans the field below...
Watch for Lords of the River, joining the fight later this winter!
